“Is 45 WPM good?” depends entirely on who is asking. For a student writing assignments, it is comfortably fine. For an SSC typing test, it clears the bar. For a transcriptionist, it is a career problem. This guide gives you the real numbers — from the largest public dataset on typing speed ever collected — plus the part almost every article skips: why accuracy is worth more than raw speed, and what actually stops most people from getting faster.
Quick answer: the average measured typing speed is about 52 WPM, and most people sit between 40 and 65. Above 70 is genuinely fast; above 90 puts you in a small minority. 1What one “word” actually means
WPM is not a count of words. It never has been. The standard, used by every serious test since the typewriter era, defines one word as five characters, spaces included. “Rhinoceros ” is two words. “I am a cat ” is roughly two and a bit.
This is deliberate: it stops a test on short words from flattering you and a test on long ones from punishing you. It also means all the following are the same claim expressed differently:

Gross WPM vs net WPM — the number that matters
Gross (raw) WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM counts only what you got right. A good test reports both, and the gap between them is your real diagnostic:
- Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. If you typed 320 correct characters in one minute, that is 64 net WPM.
- A large gap means you are typing above your control speed. Raw 78, net 58 is not a 78 WPM typist — it is a 58 WPM typist creating work for their future self.
- A tiny gap at a modest speed is a green light. If you are at 50 WPM with 99% accuracy, you have room to push speed. Push it.
2The real distribution — what the data says
The best public dataset comes from Aalto University, which in 2018 collected 136 million keystrokes from 168,000 volunteers. It is by far the largest study of its kind, and it is the source of the figures you see quoted everywhere without attribution.
Where typists actually land
Words per minute. Aalto University’s 2018 keystroke study put the overall average at 52 WPM, with the fastest 5% above 80 and the fastest individuals approaching 120. The all-time record on a standard keyboard is 216 WPM — a useful reminder that the ceiling is far above where most of us plateau.
Two findings from that study worth knowing. Typists using all ten fingers were faster on average — but the gap was smaller than touch-typing advocates claim, and plenty of fast typists use six or eight fingers in a self-taught pattern. What mattered far more was rollover: starting the next keypress before releasing the last. Fast typing is overlapping, not staccato.

4Why accuracy beats speed — with the arithmetic
Every error costs far more than the keystroke that caused it. You have to notice it, stop, reach for backspace, delete, retype, and re-find your place. Measured honestly, that is usually five to ten keystrokes’ worth of time for a single wrong character — and that is before counting the errors you don’t catch, which cost you at the proofreading stage instead.

Typist A is not faster than Typist B in any way that matters, and would fail a test that B passes. This is why the standard coaching advice is right: train accuracy first, and let speed follow. Slowing down to 95% of your maximum until you hit 98–99% accuracy, then rebuilding speed on that foundation, is the fastest route to a genuinely higher number.
5The five things that actually cap your speed
- Looking at the keyboard. The single biggest ceiling. Every glance down costs you the re-find time when you look back up. Learning home-row position (index fingers on F and J, feeling for the bumps) is uncomfortable for about a week and then permanent.
- Backspace as a reflex. Many people hit backspace before they have even identified what went wrong, then retype several correct characters unnecessarily. Train yourself to pause a beat, see the error, and fix only it.
- Practising only easy text. Prose full of common words rehearses what you can already do. Progress comes from the hard stuff: capitals, numbers, punctuation, brackets, and the top-row keys you avoid. If your test text has no digits in it, your test is flattering you.
- The weak-finger gap. Almost everyone’s little fingers lag — Q, A, Z, P, and the semicolon. Five minutes a day on drills that isolate those columns removes a bottleneck you probably cannot feel.

6A four-week plan that works
Fifteen focused minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Typical improvement over a month at this cadence is 10–15 WPM from a starting point below 50, less from a higher base — improvement gets harder the faster you already are.
- Week 0 — measure honestly. Take three one-minute tests on the Typing Speed Test and record raw WPM, net WPM and accuracy. Write them down. The tool remembers your best per duration, so you have a visible target from day one.
- Week 1 — accuracy only. Deliberately type at about 80% of your maximum until you consistently hit 98%+. Your WPM will drop. Let it. You are building the control that everything else sits on.

Is 100 WPM possible for a normal person?
Yes, but it takes deliberate practice over months rather than weeks, and near-flawless accuracy first. Roughly the top few percent of typists are there. Does typing speed differ on a laptop and a mechanical keyboard?
