Enter your video topic
Use the phrase someone would actually search for, not your video title. “How to fix a leaking tap” produces better tags than “Ep 14 — Plumbing Disasters”.
Choose how many tags you want
More is not better. YouTube’s tag field holds 500 characters in total, and a smaller set of accurate tags describes a video more clearly than a long list of loose ones.
Generate and review
You get a mix of exact, broad and long-tail variations. Read them as a human would — anything that does not honestly describe your video should come out.
Remove what does not fit
This is the step people skip and the one that matters. Tags that misdescribe the video are worse than no tags: they attract viewers who leave quickly, which is a signal YouTube notices.
Watch the character counter
The counter shows how much of the 500-character budget you have used. If you are close to it, cut the weakest tags rather than the most specific ones.
Copy into YouTube Studio
Paste into the tags field under Details → Show more. Tags are one modest signal among many — the title, thumbnail and description do considerably more work.
About the YouTube Tag Generator
This tool generates tag suggestions from a topic you enter, in your browser. It is worth being straightforward about what tags do, because a great deal written about them overstates it.
What tags actually contribute
Tags are a minor ranking signal. YouTube has said as much publicly, and its own creator documentation places them well below title, thumbnail and viewer behaviour in importance. They help mainly in two narrow cases: when your topic is commonly misspelled, and when it is known by more than one name.
What actually determines whether a video is recommended is watch time, click-through rate on the thumbnail, and audience retention. No set of tags rescues a video people click away from. YouTube’s creator documentation is the honest reference here.
Which is not to say skip them. They are free, they take two minutes, and on a competitive topic small signals are still signals. Just do not expect them to carry a video.
The 500-character budget
YouTube allows 500 characters across all tags combined, including the commas. That is roughly 20 to 30 tags depending on length.
| Tag type | Example | Worth including |
|---|---|---|
| Exact topic | how to fix a leaking tap |
Always — make it the first tag |
| Close variation | fix dripping faucet |
Yes, especially regional wording |
| Long-tail | fix leaking tap without plumber |
Yes — less competition |
| Common misspelling | leeking tap |
Only if genuinely common |
| Broad category | plumbing |
One or two at most |
| Unrelated popular term | mrbeast |
Never — a policy violation |
Tags that hurt
Irrelevant tags are against YouTube’s policies and can result in removal. Tagging a video with unrelated trending terms to catch traffic is explicitly prohibited, not a clever tactic.
It also fails on its own terms. Viewers arriving from a misleading tag leave within seconds, and short view duration is a far stronger negative signal than any tag is a positive one. You are trading a weak benefit for a strong penalty.
Volume is not a strategy either. Filling all 500 characters with loosely related terms dilutes the signal rather than strengthening it. Fifteen accurate tags describe a video better than thirty vague ones.
Where the effort actually pays
Put your keyword in the title, naturally — it carries far more weight than any tag. Write a real description: the first two lines appear in search results, and the rest gives YouTube genuine context. Design a thumbnail that reads at small size, since click-through rate is one of the strongest signals there is. Then add tags, in that order.
The Character Counter will check your title against the 100-character limit, and against the roughly 60 characters that actually display.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do YouTube tags still matter in 2026?
A little. They are a minor signal that mainly helps with misspellings and topics known by more than one name. Title, thumbnail and audience retention matter far more. Tags are worth two minutes, not two hours.
How many tags should I use?
Around 15 to 20 accurate ones. YouTube allows 500 characters in total across all tags, but filling that budget with loosely related terms dilutes the signal rather than strengthening it.
Can I use popular unrelated tags to get more views?
No. Irrelevant tags violate YouTube’s policies and can lead to removal. They also backfire — viewers arriving from a misleading tag leave within seconds, and short view duration is a much stronger negative signal than a tag is a positive one.
What should my first tag be?
Your exact main keyword, in the wording someone would actually type into search. Put the most precise description first and let broader terms follow.
Should I copy tags from competitors?
Use them as research, not as a list to copy. Their tags describe their video, not yours. A tag that does not honestly describe your content will bring in viewers who leave immediately.
Do hashtags in the description work the same way?
No, they are separate. Hashtags in the description appear above the video title and are clickable, so they behave more like navigation than like tags. Three is the practical maximum before YouTube ignores them.
What matters more than tags?
The thumbnail and title, by a wide margin, because they determine whether anyone clicks. Then audience retention, which determines whether YouTube keeps recommending the video. Tags are a distant fourth.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. Tag generation runs in JavaScript inside this page, so unpublished video topics stay on your device.
