About the Words to Minutes Converter
Speech length is the single most common thing presenters get wrong, and it is entirely predictable: a script has a word count, and speaking has a pace. This converter turns one into the other, in both directions — how long your script will run, or how many words a talk of a given length actually needs.
What pace should you use?
A comfortable presentation pace is around 130 words per minute. Below about 110 the delivery starts to drag; above 160 an audience struggles to follow, particularly with unfamiliar material or a mixed-language room. Slow and deliberate at 100 wpm suits ceremonial or technical delivery, while 150 is closer to relaxed conversation. Pick the pace that matches how you actually speak, not how you wish you did — record yourself reading a page aloud if you are unsure.
The numbers you will need most
At 130 words per minute, a one-minute talk is about 130 words, three minutes about 390, five minutes about 650, ten minutes about 1,300 and twenty minutes about 2,600. That last figure surprises people: a twenty-minute conference slot is a substantial piece of writing, and it is why over-running is so common.
Always aim under
Pauses for emphasis, slide changes, a demonstration, questions from the floor and simple nerves all add time. Writing to about 90% of your slot leaves room for all of it. Reading is much faster than speaking — most people read silently at roughly 200 words per minute — so a script that feels short on the page will run longer than you expect aloud.
