Your tutor asked for 1,500 words, the brief says “about three pages”, and the two numbers refuse to agree. Word counts and page counts measure different things — one is your writing, the other is your formatting — so here is the conversion in both directions, with the settings that change it and the reading and speaking times that usually come up in the same breath.
Quick answer: at 12 pt Times New Roman or Arial with 1-inch margins, a page holds about 500 words single-spaced or 250 words double-spaced. So 500 words is one page single-spaced or two pages double-spaced. Check any draft instantly with the free Word Counter.
1Word count to page chart
Based on the standard academic setup — 12 pt Times New Roman or Arial, 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins, no headings or images breaking up the text:
| Words | Single-spaced | 1.5 spacing | Double-spaced |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 words | ½ page | ⅔ page | 1 page |
| 500 words | 1 page | 1⅓ pages | 2 pages |
| 750 words | 1½ pages | 2 pages | 3 pages |
| 1,000 words | 2 pages | 2⅔ pages | 4 pages |
| 1,500 words | 3 pages | 4 pages | 6 pages |
| 2,000 words | 4 pages | 5⅓ pages | 8 pages |
| 2,500 words | 5 pages | 6⅔ pages | 10 pages |
| 3,000 words | 6 pages | 8 pages | 12 pages |
| 5,000 words | 10 pages | 13⅓ pages | 20 pages |
| 10,000 words | 20 pages | 26⅔ pages | 40 pages |
Reading it the other way: one page ≈ 500 words single-spaced, five pages ≈ 2,500 words, ten pages ≈ 5,000 words. Halve those figures for double spacing.
2What changes the count
Those numbers assume defaults nobody checks. Change any of them and the page count moves, sometimes a lot:
| Setting | Effect on words per page |
|---|---|
| Font size 11 pt instead of 12 | Roughly 10–15% more words fit |
| Calibri or Georgia at 11 pt | Noticeably more than 12 pt Times New Roman |
| Courier New (monospaced) | Far fewer — often close to half a normal page |
| Margins at 1 inch vs 1.25 inch | Wider margins can cost 10% of the page |
| Headings, block quotes, lists | Fewer words per page — white space eats the room |
| Images, tables, charts | Unpredictable; count them separately |
| A4 vs US Letter | A4 is taller, so it takes slightly more words per page |
If a brief gives a page count, ask for a word count. Page counts are unenforceable — a wider margin and a bigger font can turn 1,200 words into “four pages”. Most universities and publishers have moved to word limits for exactly that reason, and a word count is the only number you can actually verify.
3Words to reading time
Average adult silent reading runs at roughly 200 words per minute for general text, slower for dense technical material:
| Length | Reading time (≈200 wpm) | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| 300 words | ≈ 1½ minutes | Short blog post, email newsletter |
| 600 words | ≈ 3 minutes | Standard article, op-ed |
| 1,000 words | ≈ 5 minutes | In-depth blog post |
| 2,000 words | ≈ 10 minutes | Long-form guide |
| 5,000 words | ≈ 25 minutes | Long feature, short report |
The Word Counter shows this live as you type, so you can aim at a reading time rather than guessing.
4Words to speaking time
Speaking is much slower than reading — a comfortable presentation pace is around 130 words per minute. Rushing past 160 makes you hard to follow; dropping below 110 sounds laboured.
| Talk length | Script length (≈130 wpm) |
|---|---|
| 1 minute | ≈ 130 words |
| 3 minutes | ≈ 390 words |
| 5 minutes | ≈ 650 words |
| 10 minutes | ≈ 1,300 words |
| 15 minutes | ≈ 1,950 words |
| 20 minutes | ≈ 2,600 words |
Write to the lower end of your estimate. Pauses, slides, questions and nerves all add time, and no audience has ever complained that a talk finished early.
5Characters, pages and other units
- Characters per word: English averages about five letters per word, so roughly six characters including the space. A 500-word page is therefore around 3,000 characters.
- Paragraphs: 100–200 words each is typical for readable prose, so a double-spaced page usually holds one to three paragraphs.
- Book pages: a printed novel page usually carries 250–300 words because the page itself is smaller than A4 — which is why a 90,000-word novel runs to roughly 300 printed pages.
- Handwriting: ordinary handwriting on A4 lands near 100–150 words per side, so a handwritten essay fills far more paper than the typed equivalent.

7Frequently Asked Questions
How many pages is 500 words?
One page single-spaced or two pages double-spaced, at 12 pt Times New Roman or Arial with 1-inch margins. Headings, lists and images reduce it.
How many pages is 1000 words double spaced?
About four pages. Single-spaced, the same 1,000 words fills roughly two pages.
How many words is 5 pages?
Roughly 2,500 words single-spaced or 1,250 words double-spaced. If your assignment says five pages without specifying spacing, assume double — that is the academic default.
How many words is a 5-minute speech?
About 650 words at a comfortable speaking pace of 130 words per minute. Aim slightly under, because pauses, slides and audience questions always add time.
How long does it take to read 1000 words?
About five minutes at the average adult reading speed of 200 words per minute. Technical or unfamiliar material takes longer.
How many words are on a page of a book?
Usually 250–300, because a printed book page is smaller than A4 and carries wider margins. That is why word counts, not page counts, are used in publishing.
Write to the word count. The page count will take care of itself.
