Getting the settings right
The delay is per frame: 10 photos at 0.5 s make a 5-second loop. Use 1 s for slideshows people should “read”, 0.25 s for motion, 0.1 s only for genuine animation frames. Width drives file size hard — GIF is an old, chunky format, so a 480 px output of 10 photos typically lands around 1–3 MB while 640 px can double that; 320 px is the safe choice for chat apps. Mixed portrait and landscape photos are letterboxed onto the first image’s shape so nothing gets cropped.
GIF vs video — when to use which
A GIF’s superpower is autoplay-everywhere and drag-anywhere; its weakness is size and a 256-colour palette. Encoding runs on a small engine downloaded on first use (a few hundred KB, cached afterwards) and takes a few seconds for typical inputs.
