How to use the MP4 to GIF converter

Step 2 — Trim to the part you want

This is the step that matters most. Step 3 — Choose frame rate and width

12 frames a second and 480 pixels wide suit most uses and are the defaults. Both settings multiply the file size, so lower them for anything going into an email or a chat message. The panel shows how many frames will be encoded as you change them.

Step 4 — Pick the colour handling

Leave this on Optimised palette unless you have a reason not to. It runs the clip twice: once to work out the best 256 colours for the motion in your specific footage, then again to encode using them. The difference against a single-pass encode is obvious on gradients, skin tones and anything with a soft background.

Fine-tuning: dithering, looping, direction

Dithering decides how the encoder fakes colours that are not in the 256-colour palette. Sierra is a good default; Floyd–Steinberg is smoothest on gradients; Bayer produces the smallest files; None gives flat colour and the sharpest edges, which suits screen recordings and line art. You can also set the loop count or reverse the clip.

Step 5 — Convert and download

The progress bar names the stage it is on, including the one-off engine download on first use. When it finishes you get the GIF on a chequerboard so transparency is visible, along with its size, dimensions, length and frame count. Download it, or adjust a setting and convert again — the engine stays loaded, so the second attempt is much faster.

About the MP4 to GIF converter

That architecture has a consequence worth stating plainly: your video is never uploaded. Nothing is transmitted, nothing is queued on someone else’s machine, and nothing is deleted later because nothing was stored in the first place. Why the output looks better than most converters

A GIF can only hold 256 colours per frame, while your video holds millions. How those 256 are chosen is the single biggest factor in how the result looks. Most online converters encode in one pass, letting the encoder pick colours blindly as it goes — which is what produces the banded skies, blotchy skin tones and muddy gradients that make GIFs look dated.

This tool uses the two-pass palette method. The first pass analyses your actual clip and builds a palette suited to the colours and motion in it; the second encodes against that palette. It takes slightly longer and produces a noticeably cleaner, often smaller GIF. You can switch to a single global palette or a fast no-palette encode if you prefer speed.

The settings explained

Trim — start and end

Defines which part of the video becomes the GIF. Everything else about file size follows from this: a GIF stores complete frames, so doubling the length roughly doubles the file. The tool defaults to the first five seconds rather than the whole video for exactly that reason.

Frame rate

How many frames per second the GIF holds. 12 is smooth enough for most motion and half the size of 24. Drop to 8 for slideshow-like content or where size is critical; go to 20 or 24 only for fast motion where stutter would be obvious. Note that a GIF’s frame timing is stored in hundredths of a second, so very high frame rates are approximated anyway.

Width

The output is scaled to this width and the height follows automatically to preserve the aspect ratio. Scaling uses the Lanczos filter, which keeps detail far better than the default. 480 px suits most embeds; 320 px is right for chat; “Keep original” is rarely a good idea for a GIF.

Dithering

How the encoder handles colours that are not in the palette. Sierra is a balanced default. Floyd–Steinberg gives the smoothest gradients but adds noise that costs file size. Bayer produces a regular pattern that compresses very well — the smallest files, at the cost of a visible texture. None gives flat blocks of colour and the crispest edges, which is usually best for screen recordings, text and line art.

Looping

GIFs loop forever by default, which is what almost everyone wants. You can also set two or three plays, or a single play that stops on the last frame.

Colour handling

Optimised palette builds a palette from the motion in your clip — best quality, two passes. Single global palette analyses the whole clip as one image, which is better for footage with a static background. Fast skips the analysis entirely for a quick preview.

Keeping GIF file sizes down

GIFs are large because the format stores full frames with no motion compression, using technology from 1987. A ten-second clip at 24 fps and 800 px is 240 full images. In rough order of impact:

  1. Trim harder. Length has the biggest effect of anything. Three seconds instead of ten cuts the file by roughly two thirds.
  2. Lower the frame rate. 12 fps instead of 24 roughly halves the size, and most viewers will not notice.
  3. Reduce the width. Halving the width quarters the pixel count.
  4. Try Bayer dithering, or none. Dither noise defeats the compression GIF relies on; flat colour compresses far better.
  5. Prefer simple backgrounds. Camera grain and busy scenes are expensive; screen recordings with flat panels are cheap.

If the result is still too big, the honest answer is that GIF may be the wrong format. An MP4 or WebM of the same clip is typically five to ten times smaller at better quality — use GIF only where the destination genuinely cannot take a video.
