Ishihara plates use pseudoisochromatic dots. The number and background have the SAME luminance (brightness) but different hues along a confusion axis. Normal vision detects the hue difference; colorblind users cannot, so they see only a uniform field of dots.
It simulates an anomaloscope Rayleigh match. Normal trichromats find a precise matching position. Anomalous trichromats accept a wider range. Dichromats accept nearly any position along the axis.
