Step 1 — Read the address at the top
It appears on its own as soon as the page loads, with a copy button beside it. That figure is your public address — the one every website you visit can see — not the 192.168 or 10.x address your router hands your device.
Step 2 — Check whether you have IPv6
Underneath, the page says whether your connection also has an IPv6 address, and shows it if so. Most home connections in most countries are still IPv4 only, and that is not a fault.
Step 3 — See where the address is placed
City, region, country, postcode, coordinates, timezone, the network operator and its ASN. Treat the location as approximate — it identifies your provider’s network, not your house.
Step 4 — Look for the VPN check
The page compares the clock offset your device reports with the timezone of the address. A match suggests nothing unusual; a gap usually means a VPN, a proxy or a company network — or simply that you are travelling with your clock unchanged.
Step 5 — See what your browser reveals by itself
Below that is what any site can read without asking anything of anyone: your browser and platform, the languages you accept, your screen size, your timezone, and whether Do Not Track is set. No lookup is involved — that is the point.
Step 6 — Look up something else
Put any IP address or domain in the box to see where it is registered. Domains are resolved to an address first, so example.com works as well as 1.1.1.1.
About this tool
This page tells you the public IP address the internet currently sees you at, where that address is registered, which network operates it, and what your browser discloses on its own. You can also look up any other address or domain. It is free, needs no account, and stores nothing.
What we contact, and why it cannot be avoided
Most of the tools on this site run entirely inside your browser. This one cannot, and it is worth being straight about why: a page cannot see its own visitor’s IP address. The address exists in the connection between your network and a server, so a server has to tell you what it sees.
So, on load, this page asks:
- ipify.org — for the address itself, and separately for an IPv6 address if you have one.
- ipapi.co — for the location, operator and network details, falling back to ipwho.is if that service is unavailable or rate-limited.
- Google Public DNS — only when you type a domain into the lookup box, to resolve it to an address.
Each of those sees your address, because that is what makes the answer possible. What does not happen: we store nothing, we log nothing, no map is embedded, and no result is kept after you close the tab. The browser facts further down the page are read locally and involve no request at all.
How accurate is the location, honestly
Not very, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. An IP address is assigned to a network, not to a person or a building, so geolocation tells you where the network is registered or where its equipment sits.
- Country is reliable — typically 95–99% correct.
- City is a guess that is right more often than not. Independent studies put city-level accuracy somewhere between 55% and 80%, varying enormously by country and by provider.
- The coordinates are not your coordinates. They are usually the centre of a city, a provider’s exchange, or in some cases the geographic centre of a whole country when nothing better is known.
- Mobile connections are the worst case. Traffic often exits through a gateway hundreds of kilometres from the phone, so a mobile IP can place you in a different state entirely.
If the city shown is wrong, nothing is broken — that is the normal accuracy of the method. The only way a website knows your real position is if you grant it location permission, which this page never asks for.
Public address, private address
Two different things share the name “IP address”:
- Your public address — the one on this page. It belongs to your router or your provider, and everything in your home shares it. It is what a website, a game server or an email host sees.
- Your private address — something like
192.168.1.14,10.0.0.5or172.16.x.x. Your router assigns it inside your own network, it is invisible from the internet, and millions of homes use exactly the same numbers.
A web page cannot read your private address, and any site claiming to show it is either guessing or using a browser feature that modern browsers have deliberately closed off.
Why your address changes
Most home connections get a dynamic address: the provider leases you one, and it may change when the router restarts, when the lease expires, or when the provider reorganises its pool. A static address stays the same and usually costs extra — businesses buy them for servers, VPN endpoints and mail systems.
Your address also changes the moment you connect through something else: a VPN, a corporate network, a mobile hotspot or public Wi-Fi. That is the point of a VPN — the site sees the VPN’s address instead of yours.

An IP address on its own is closer to a postcode than to a name. It matters mostly in combination with other things — which is why the browser section on this page is worth a look.
ASN, and why it is on the page
An Autonomous System Number identifies the network that owns a block of addresses — an internet provider, a hosting company, a university, a mobile operator. It is more informative than the city, because it is a fact of registration rather than an estimate. If the ASN belongs to a hosting company rather than a consumer provider, the connection is probably a VPN, a proxy or a server.

What is my IP address?

Why does the page show a different city from where I am?
Because IP geolocation locates a network, not a device. City-level accuracy is only right somewhere between about 55% and 80% of the time, and mobile connections are worse because traffic often leaves through a gateway a long way away. Country is nearly always right; the city frequently is not.
Is my IP address private information?
It is personal data under the GDPR, but it is not secret: every site you visit receives it automatically, because it has to in order to send anything back. On its own it identifies a network, not a person.
Does this page store my IP address?
No. Nothing is stored, logged or kept after you close the tab. It is worth being precise, though: the lookup itself sends your address to ipify and ipapi.co, because there is no other way for a web page to learn it. Those services have their own policies.
How do I hide or change my IP address?
Use a VPN, which replaces your address with the VPN server’s. Restarting your router sometimes gets you a new address from your provider if the connection is dynamic. Mobile data gives you a different one again. Note that a VPN hides your address from the sites you visit, not from the VPN itself.
How can I tell if my VPN is actually working?
Load this page with the VPN on: the address, the operator and usually the country should all change. The page also compares your device clock with the timezone of the address and tells you when they disagree, which is the everyday sign that traffic is being routed somewhere else.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 uses four numbers like 203.0.113.7 and ran out of addresses years ago. IPv6 uses longer hexadecimal addresses like 2606:4700:4700::1111 and has effectively unlimited room. Many connections still have only IPv4; this page tells you which you have.
What does the ASN mean?
It is the registration number of the network that owns your address block. It identifies your provider more reliably than the city does, and it is how you can tell a home connection from a data centre.
Can someone find my home address from my IP?
No. The coordinates shown for any IP are typically a city centre or a provider’s equipment, not a building. Only your internet provider can connect an address to an account, and in most countries that requires a legal request.
Why does my IP keep changing?
Because most home connections are dynamic: the provider leases addresses and rotates them. Restarts, lease expiry and network changes all cause it. Static addresses exist but are normally a paid business option.
Can I look up someone else’s IP address here?
You can look up any address or domain and see where it is registered and who operates it — the same public information anyone can query. It will not tell you who a person is.
Why is there no map any more?
Because the coordinates an IP gives you are not accurate enough for a map to mean much, and embedding one sent every visitor’s approximate location to a third party before they had asked for anything. The coordinates are shown as text, with a link that opens OpenStreetMap only if you choose to click it.
