How this works. Your current grade covers everything already marked, which is 70% of the course. The final is worth the rest, so the score you need is whatever closes the gap between where you are and where you want to finish. If the answer is over 100% the target is out of reach with this final alone — and if it is zero or below, you have already secured it.

About the Final Grade Calculator

Walking into a final exam without knowing what you need is the fastest way to over-revise the wrong thing or under-revise the right one. This calculator answers the question directly: given the grade you hold now and how much the final is worth, what score do you need to finish where you want?

The formula

Your current grade covers the portion of the course already marked. The final covers the rest. So the score you need is:

Required = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight

where Weight is the final exam expressed as a decimal. If you hold 78%, the final is worth 30%, and you want to finish on 85%, the sum is (85 − 78 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 101.3% — just out of reach, which is exactly the sort of thing you want to know before exam week rather than after it.

Reading the result

A required score of zero or below means the target is already secured, even with a blank paper. Anything up to about 85% is realistically achievable with solid revision. Above 100% means it cannot be reached through the final alone — at which point the useful move is to look at the table and aim for the highest grade still within reach, and to check whether any coursework marks can still be improved or resubmitted.

Getting the inputs right

The two numbers people get wrong are the current grade and the weight. Your current grade should be the weighted average of everything marked so far, as your institution calculates it — not an average of raw scores if assessments carry different weights. The weight is what the final contributes to the overall module, which is in the course handbook or syllabus. For grade point conversions rather than percentages, use the GPA Calculator or the CGPA to Percentage Converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need on my final to pass?

Enter your current grade, the weight of the final and your target — the calculator returns the exact score required. The table also shows what you would need for every common target from 50% up to 90%.

What is the formula for the grade I need on my final?

Required = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight, where Weight is the final exam as a decimal. For a 78% current grade, a 30% final and an 85% target, that gives 101.3%.

What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?

The target is not reachable through the final alone. Use the table to find the highest grade still achievable, and check whether any coursework can still be improved — some courses allow resubmission or drop the lowest score.

Where do I find the weight of my final exam?

It is in your course syllabus or module handbook, usually written as a percentage of the overall mark, such as “final examination 40%”.

Does this work for weighted categories like homework and quizzes?

This tool handles the common case of one final against everything already marked. If your course splits into several weighted categories, first work out your combined current grade across those categories, then enter it here.
